Afterwards you can only respec by doing an ultra expensive and grindy end-game event. Respecing can only be done once per difficulty (for a 3 times: normal, nightmare, hell). On the other hand, D2, as expected from an old game, is more hardcore in that sense. So, through that lens, that kind of variety is unthinkable in Diablo 2.
